Work Record 8

Work Record 8

For this shoot I decided to take more photos of people again because this time I new what sort of photos I wanted.

For this shoot, I was once again influenced by Christoffer Relander. After researching more of his work and doing the shoot beforehand, I discovered that I preferred the model to be looking off into the distance as if they're deep in thought. Also, I like how Relander does this as well because I feel this creates more of an impact on the viewer.

I like this photo because the model has a serious look on the models face, this creates a sense of distress in the atmosphere because people generally look downwards if they are unhappy with something. Also, I like how the model is bringing her legs close to her chest because this makes her seem as if she is seeking for comfort.

I like this photo because the model is looking off towards the side, which creates the sense that he is reflecting about his actions. Also, the way that he is resting his head on his hand suggests that he is deep in thought and emphasises my message behind these photos.

I like this photo because the model is in the position where she seems to be thinking about a lot, as if she is thinking about her own actions that affect nature or the worlds's actions that affect nature globally.

I like this photo because of the way the model is positioned, a lot of his body is shown, therefore, when I comes to editing later, more of the flower pictures will be able to be shown. This will allow me to present more of a reflection of nature because more of an image being shown and emphasise how we have limited time to change our actions.

Worst Images

I don't like this photo because the model is slightly smirking which ruins the illusion that he is in deep thought and reflecting on his own and others actions. To prevent images like this in the future I'll make sure that the atmosphere while taking the shoot is serious and double check the model isn't smiling when I don't want them to.

I don't like this photo because you are not able to see the model's face as much, therefore, this also ruins the illusion because you are unable to see the models features as clearly. To prevent something like this in the future, I'll pay more attention to the models position and change any small details if I have to in my liking.

AO1 - For this shoot, I was heavily inspired by Christoffer Relander because his work has helped me think more broader and how I can expand my portfolio even further. This shoot is very similar to what Relander does by emerging a photo of a person and nature together. However, I wanted to improve on my shoot from before because I found that the shoot I did before had a grey background so I decided to do a different set up in the studio to create the white background.

AO2 - I used a Canon 600D to take these photos with my settings set to ISO 200 and shutter speed set to 1/125 through out the whole shoot. My aperture was varied during the shoot but was mostly kept to f11. For this shoot, I was in the studio and I used two soft boxes on either side of the camera and a white back drop. One of the soft boxes was facing a reflector so it would bounce off and make the background even more white. I didn't use a tripod because I wanted to be able to freely move the camera so I can get a variety of angles of the model because I was switching from standing shots to floor shots.

AO3 - My idea for recording A Reflection of Nature was to present the idea that people themselves was reflecting about nature and if there's anything they could do to help. I wanted to capture the model deep in thought to portray how they are thinking about nature and how we are slowly damaging our planet and we have very limited time to turn things around until the damage it permanent. I decided to redo this shoot again and improve from my last one because I did not like how the background was grey because when I would edit them later it would take away attention from the nature inside the person. By having the white background I found that the colours from the nature pictures stands out a lot more and helps emphasise the message I'm trying to display.

AO4 - In my opinion, I feel as if I have produced a strong series of images because I have developed further from what I was originally shooting by making the photos look like better quality. Also, this project becomes more personal to me because I feel strongly about our planet and how we need to start making more actions to help produce a more safer and stable world for future generations. This shoot will be able to bring my message more across to people and make my photos look more pleasing because there will be a stronger contrast.

Manipulating My Photos

I used the same technique as before due to this shoot more or less just developing slightly from before. This time however, I decided to use some of my already edited photos from previous shoots that I had in my portfolio so I could link all of my work more closely together and I thought that this would make my photos look more interesting because of the bold colours. I took these photos into Photoshop and dragged the one of the edited photos on top of the model and then rubbed out the excess so it made it seem that the landscape was inside the person. After getting rid of the excess, it manipulated the opacity and tried to get the right balance between the two photos so one wasn't over powering the other. Once I had finished editing I decided to darken the flower slightly where the face was the the facial features would stand out more and emphasise how they are thinking/ reflecting about their actions.

For this shoot, I went into the forest that I lived near and took some pictures of the trees and anything else I could find. The reason I decided to do this shoot was because I wanted to combine these photos with the images of the models from the previous shoot.

Unfortunately, I lost my SD card, therefore the photos I have enlarged are screen grabs and had ended up slightly blurry due to the lack of quality.

For this shoot, I was inspired by Eliot Porter as he takes a lot of pictures of trees and forest scenery. I liked how his photos were bright and vivd which made the photo seem more appealing. Also, I like how he showed so much beauty in nature and making the photo seem simple at the same time. I would like to achieve something similar with my photos because I might be able to emphasise how the message I'm trying to portray of reflecting about nature.

I liked this because of the way the light shines through and onto some of the trees adding extra depth and tone. Also, I like how as you look through the photo the forest gets gradually darker creating a sense of foreboding because you cannot see where the tree line ends.

I like this photos because the tone in the background looks blueish creating a calming sensation. Also, I like how the background is relatively dark making the white trees stand out even further due to the contrast.

I like this photo because the trees are to the sides gradually goes into the centre making the viewer's eyes draw into the middle of the photo. Also, I like how the trees frame the photo making everything feel more balanced and soothing because everything fits into place.

I don't like this photo because the water looks murky and there is very limited tone or texture due to everything more ore less being the same tone.

I don't like this photo because it seems flat. In my opinion, there is nothing in this photo that adds tone or texture that creates depth. When I took the photo, I thought that the white frost might add more detail by being different to the forest in the background but reviewing it now, I feel as if the frost added nothing to the photo.

AO1 -  For this shoot, I was inspired by Eliot Porter because I liked the way how made the forests look bright and vivd. Additionally, his photos just portrays the beauty is all kind of nature and I wanted to display the same results with my photos. However, I knew before I started the shoot that I wouldn't of had the same affect as Porter because it was the wrong time of year to capture the colours due to me taking the photos during winter.

AO2 - I used a Canon 600D to take these photos with my settings set to ISO 400 and sometimes 800 when I went deeper into the forest, and shutter speed set to 1/125 through out the whole shoot. My aperture was varied during the shoot but was mostly between f8-f11. I had to keep varying my aperture because in some parts of the forest there would be more gaps where light could get through and other places where there weren't.

AO3 - My idea for recording A Reflection of Nature was to present more sides to nature other than flowers and portray how there are multiple sides to nature, both beautiful and murky. The plan for this shoot is to combine them with the photos of the model from a pervious shoot to portray them to reflect about nature. I like Best Image 2 because I feel that the white trees will stand out even further and help produce more of a contrast when I edit this photo into the model.

AO4 - In my opinion, I feel as if I have produced a strong series of images because I have presented a different side to nature. By taking pictures of forests I am able to portray how there are multiple sides to nature that we need to protect, not just the beautiful bright kind.

Manipulating My Photos

For this shoot, I use a photo from Shoot 6 on and placed the photo of the forest on top. I reduced the opacity to roughly 30% so I was able to see the model behind the photo. Then I took the rubber tool and rubbed out the areas that I didn't want showing and once I was done, I changed the opacity to however I seemed fit.

For this shoot I decided to take photos of people to then later put nature pictures over them later in Photoshop to make it seem like they are personally reflecting on nature. Overall, I wanted to take a different approach to reflection in nature to show how I am experimenting with different techniques.

Unfortunately, I lost my SD card, therefore the photos I have enlarged are screen grabs and had ended up slightly blurry due to the lack of quality.

Christoffer Relander was the influence of this shoot because I wanted to create a more deeper meaning of photos to my and his work helped me figure out how. Relander combines both people and nature together and I wanted to do something similar to help present how people are reflecting on nature and how they can help save the environment. I like how Relander blends the two photos together effortlessly to help create the illusion more realistic.

I like this photo because you can still see most of the models face but they’re not staring straight into the camera, therefore, creating this sense of reflection of life in the models face, this helped me steer my project through a different direction.

I like this photo because you are still able to see the models face but she is not looking at the camera to add an extra mysterious vibe. Also, I like how I will manipulate the photo later the hair will add texture and the pose the model is standing in will allow me to add more of the nature pictures in later.

I like this photo because you cannot see the models face to create mystery by not knowing their true identity. Also, I like how I have taken this photo in portrait because you are able to see more of the nature pictures later when I put them in.

I don't like this photo because it is too overly exposed making the photo seemed too whitewashed. Also you are not able to see much detail on the face because they are washed out from there being too much light coming through the camera.

I don't like this photo either for the same reason, due to the over exposure, the model has come out extremely pale and you're not able to see tone on her face which helps add extra depth. To avoid this in the future, when I'm in the studio I will double check the settings the light reader gives to make sure it is correct and when I am outside doing a shoot I'll double check my settings before taking a photo.

I didn't use a tripod because I wanted to be able to freely move the camera so I can get a variety of angles of the model because I was still not too sure on what I wanted yet.

AO3 - My idea for recording A Reflection of Nature was to present the idea that people themselves was reflecting about nature. I wanted to capture the model deep in thought to portray how they are thinking about nature and how we are slowly damaging our planet and we have very limited time to turn things around until the damage it permanent. I found when looking back at my photos later, I preferred the photos to where the model was looking off into the distance because in my opinion, they look more like the model is deep in thought compared to the model staring straight into the camera.

AO4 - In my opinion, I feel as if I have produced a strong series of images because I have developed on my way of thinking about reflection. Also, this project becomes more personal to me because I feel strongly about our planet and how we need to start making more actions to help produce a more safer and stable world for future generations.

Manipulating My Images

I have combined three shoots together so I ended up having the same screenshots as before. I combined multiple shoots because I wanted to link my work together and keep my portfolio images closely linked with one another.

For this shoot, I dragged the landscape photo from Shoot 4 on top of the model and then rubbed out the excess so it made it seem that the landscape was inside the person. After getting rid of the excess, it manipulated the opacity and tried to get the right balance between the two photos so one wasn't over powering the other.

I decided to take the blue butterfly photo from Shoot 5 into photoshop and use the quick selection tool to only select the butterfly and get rid of the background. After, I dragged the image onto a picture of the model and rearranged the sizing so the images was a lot smaller then the original. Then I quickly copy and pasted the new arranged butterfly photos and pasted it multiple time onto the model and then placed them so they were covering her completely. I moved the each photo in a different position so it helps break the photo up a bit more and adds more texture. After placing each butterfly in a position I was happy with, I used the rubber tool to rub out any parts of the butterfly that was on the outside of the models silhouette so everything fitted in nicely. Then I grouped all of the layers of the butterflies into one big folder and changed to opacity so they were slightly faded and you were able to see the model underneath.

For this shoot, I went to a butterfly garden on the Isle of Wight and took pictures of butterflies and plants.

Unfortunately, I lost my SD card, therefore the photos I have enlarged are screen grabs and had ended up slightly blurry due to the lack of quality.

For this shoot, I was inspired by Imogen Cunningham for a few pf the photos (mostly the flower pictures). I like how she frames her the flower because there is no distractions from the background I take a lot of inspiration from her when I am taking photos of flowers. Additionally, I like how she makes the photo seem very simple and elegant but the more you stare at it you can see the detail, texture and tone in the petals and stamen. For example:

I like this photo because you are able to see most of the detail and veins on the butterfly's wing. Additionally, I like how there is a variety of shades on the butterfly by there being greens and yellows.

I like this photo because the butterfly is the main focus of the image. Also, I like how the colour of the wing on the butterfly kind of mirrors the flower, making the photo look slightly balanced and symmetrical.

I like how this photo is of complementary colours (from the red and green). Also, I like how the flower looks delicate, like how Imogen Cunningham's flowers look. I like how the flower stands out a lot compared to the darkish green background, making it the centre of attention.

I like how the pink in the centre of the flower stands out by being a deep rich colour, drawing the main focus. Additionally, I like the photo because the flower feels up majority of the frame so there are no distractions from the background.

I don't like this photo because I didn't have the the correct exposure due to having my aperture too low. Therefore, you can hardly see the butterfly and the pattern on its wing. To avoid this I need to double check my settings.

I don't like this photo because it looks to busy and displeasing. I didn't have the correct lens with me, therefore I was not able to zoom in as closely as I would like to creating a lot of negative space. To avoid this in the future, I'll bring extra lenses with me so I can get more up close and detailed photos.

AO1 - Imogen Cunningham was a helpful in this shoot because I was able to use her style of frame work when was taking of the flowers and butterflies, therefore I was able to capture a lot more detail in the petals ad singe because the photos are very zoomed in and there are no distracting elements from the background.

AO2 - For this shoot, I used a Canon 600D to take these photos with my settings set to ISO 400 and shutter speed set to 1/125 through out the whole shoot. I wanted to have a fast shutter speed just incase the butterflies started to fly away I was still be able to capture a clear image. My aperture was varied during the shoot but was mostly kept to around f8 - f11 depending on how much light was coming through because in some areas there was glass panels where more light was able to come through.

AO3 - My idea for recording A Reflection in Nature was to show more of the insects and different kind of plants to what you might normally find in public garden. By doing this, I am able to present a more wider range of nature and expand my projects slightly. I like how I have shown this with the pinkish/ purplish flower (Best Image 4) because you would not typically find flowers like that in public flower gardens in England.
AO4 - In my opinion, I feel as if I have produced a strong series of images that relates to A Reflection in Nature by producing a wider range of nature compared to previous shoots with deeper meaning, therefore I will be able to create more of a variety of portfolio images.
