Work Record 2

Work Record 2

For this shoot I went to my town pond to attempt to achieve natural reflection in the water and take pictures of the ducks and other birds around.

Research Artist

For this shoot, I wanted to use Vivian Maeir's style of photography by finding reflections sources which are already there, for example, she would take a picture of herself in a shop window. However, I wanted to show this through nature, therefore, I used a pond. I couldn't find an artist who matched my idea exactly, but I wanted to use Mair's idea of using natural reflection, hence why she is the inspiration for this shoot.

I like this photo because it looks as if the duck is looking out into the distance to the stream, this also makes it seem that the duck is reflecting on life, Also, I like how I have managed to balance the water with the fishing deck to make the photo seem slightly more calming and symmetrical.

I like how the swan and cygnet is entering the frame to make the creating the ripples travel behind. Therefore, the ripples from the swan creates a leading line towards the cygnet behind. Also, I like how the swans stand out from the dark water making their reflection stand out further. Therefore, you can clearly see a strong reflection in the water.

I like how I have managed to capture the swan's reflection clearly in the photo. Also, the swan looks like it is staring at its own reflection and studying itself.

I like this photo because because there is a high contrast in the water from where the light hits it and from where the trees create a dark shadow. Also, I like how the cygnet stands out from the water slightly to make it the main focus. Also, I like how the cygnet is bowing their head slightly creating the same affect as before that it looks like the cygnet is in a deep thought.

I don't like this photo because it looks too busy from the grass. Also, there is no reflection in the photo from the duck because I took the photo from the wrong angle. Also, there is no reflection or texture from the water from it being very murky and nothing around to create shadows.

I don't like this photo for the purpose of reflection because there is no evidence of their being a reflection. Also, the photo is very dark from the mud, water and concrete, making the photo look less visible pleasing.

AO1 - For this shoot I researched Vivian Maeir, and I found her work helpful because she would find natural everyday objects (such as buildings and cars) that creates reflection. This made me think of how I could capture reflection naturally instead of editing it later in Photoshop. Therefore, I decided to take pictures of reflection using water in the local pond.

AO2 - For this shoot I used a Canon 600D camera. All of my photos were taken with ISO 800 due to being underneath trees and having limited light. My aperture varied due to the light exposure being different between photos from the light being reflected from the water and the gaps in the leaves. My shutter speed was at 1/125 so I could capture the motion of the water and the ducks quickly and avoid motion blur as much as possible.

AO3 - My idea to capture Reflection in Nature in this shoot was to go to my local gardens and take pictures of the ducks and swans reflection from the water. For this shoot, I was mostly inspired by Maeir because she found reflection that was already there and not something she edited in later. This gave me ideas on how I could do something similar with nature instead - water.

The image of the swan (Best Image 3) helps present this because I have managed to capture a reflection of the swan in the water. This links in with my research topic by using nature to create reflection. Also, this links into my research artist because I have find a natural way to create reflection instead of manipulating the photo to create the illusion of reflection in Photoshop.

AO4 - These photos are personal to my project because I have managed to create reflection from natural resources from the water. This shoot has helped demonstrate that I understand how to represent reflection in different ways. Also, this shoot stands out the most because it is completely different to all of my other planned shoots, however, this means that this shoot doesn't closely link to my main series of photos.

Manipulating My Photos

To edit my photos, I used mainly curves and edited to exposure slightly to help the colour come through slightly more. I did not want to manipulate the photo too much because I wanted to keep the image realistic and not get rid of the reflection which was naturally there.

I like how my edited photos came out because the colours are more vibrant and helps draw the eye a lot more. Also, I like how all of the photos are still natural by there only being subtle edits.
