Work Record 4

Work Diary 4

For this shoot I went to a beach on the Isle of Wight to try and take some pictures of landscapes. I wanted to do a shoot a lot more differently to help expand my portfolio further.

Unfortunately, I lost my SD card, therefore the photos I have enlarged are screen grabs and had ended up slightly blurry due to the lack of quality.

For this shoot, Glyn Davies influenced me by the way he takes seascapes from high points and made an eerie feel. I wanted to create something similar with the seascape near me when I was on the Isle of Wight. However Davies took most of his photos in Scotland and the landscape compared to the Isle of Wight is a lot different.

I wanted to create something similar with having a landscape in the background with waves coming across the frame. I knew that I could take pictures from a high point where I could get a landscape similar to this. By having both the waves and the cliff in the frame, it adds more texture and more elements in the foreground.

I like this photo because I have managed to frame the photo so the glass ball is in the corner and the eye goes outwards towards the centre of the photos. Also for this photo, I found some stones on the beach and put them behind the ball so they would be reflected through and create additional texture.

I like this photo because you can see a lot more clearly how the beach through the ball is reflected and flipped upside down. Additionally, because the ball is roughly in the centre, the eye does from the middle and then outwards and looking at the beach behind and making the reflection stronger.

I like this photo because the land creates a leading line into the sea. Also, I like how the land surrounds the side to make the photo seem a lot more full and adds more depth. This is emphasised by them being different layers in the foreground and the cliff in the background is a few shades lighter which adds more texture.

I like this photo because the reflection in the glass ball is evenly reflected and making everything seem more balanced by the line between in the sea and beach in the background being balanced as well. Also, I like how the wind surfer is directly above the glass ball making the eye look through the photo and upwards. This makes the photo seem more symmetrical and more pleasing to the eye.

Worst Images

I don't like this photo because there is too much of the beach compared to the sea making the photo look more bulky. Also, the groynes are in the photo which makes the photo look more displeasing to the eye.

I don't like this photo because it is slightly overexposed and which makes the photo seem extra gloomy, considering the clouds are already casting a shadow down on the land and sea.

AO1 - Glyn Davis was helpful and influenced my work by making me think of my framework when taking the photos because I could capture more elements to make my image seem more intriguing. Additionally, if I was able to capture waves (like he did in the example photo) my photos could of had an extra element of danger and foreboding due to the power of the waves.

AO2 - I used a Canon 600D to take these photos with my settings set to ISO 400 and shutter speed set to 1/125 through out the whole shoot. My aperture was varied during the shoot but was mostly kept to around f8 - f11 depending on how much light was coming through.

AO3 - My idea for recording Reflection in Nature for this shoot was to use a glass ball on a beach. This created almost a double reflection due to the sea reflecting the sky above. I liked the affect of the glass ball because it makes a clear reflection of the sea and beach from behind.

AO4 - These photos are more personal to my project because I was able to experiment with different equipment to create reflection and to demonstrate that I am expanding with my original idea. Additionally, the beaches I took the pictures is where I went to the beach when I was little when I would go on holiday and I have managed to see the gradual change of the beaches getting busier and sadly dirtier.

Manipulating My Images

For these photos, I decided to combine them with a later shoot with people (inspired by Christoffer Relander). When I was originally editing these photos, it wasn't inspiring me and especially linking to my title 'A Reflection of Nature'. Therefore, I decided to step away and do more research on how I could bring more and deeper meaning to my photos.

For this shoot, I dragged the landscape photo on top of the model and then rubbed out the excess so it made it seem that the landscape was inside the person. After getting rid of the excess, it manipulated the opacity and tried to get the right balance between the two photos so one wasn't over powering the other.
